BBB issues warning against work-at-home schemes: Bakersfield woman a victim

The BBB is warning consumers to beware of offers for work-at-home jobs for mystery shoppers.
“We have received reports of three different work-at-home mystery shopper offers in the last 10 days, two of which involved fake checks,” said Blair Looney, president and CEO of the BBB.  “One recipient actually became a victim of a scam when she cashed and forwarded money from the check she received.”
The work-at-home proposals offer lucrative per hour salaries and feature detailed information on what the check is for, how the amount of the check was calculated and what the mystery shopper is supposed to do to “earn” the excess money.  Two of the offers, including the one that caught a victim, involved “evaluating” the employees of Western Union while wiring money through the Money In Minutes service.

The woman who fell victim to the scam told the BBB that she took the check to her credit union and was told there would be a two day hold placed on the funds.  When she returned two days later, she says she was told the check had cleared and she withdrew more than $1,900 to wire though Western Union so she could complete her job assignment.

Unfortunately, the rest of the story is an old and sad tale.  The check actually was returned to the bank as fraudulent; the consumer was informed she had to repay the funds to the bank and there was no work-at-home job as a mystery shopper.

If you or anyone you know receives the same or similar offer, the BBB suggests using extreme caution when responding to such an offer.
While ads claim high earnings and short hours with little or no experience, BBB files nationwide indicate no evidence of anyone making the promised money.

Complaints to the BBB generally allege non-delivery of instructions, materials, or whatever you paid for, or failure to issue refunds as promised.

In most cases, the company refuses to respond to complaints presented to it.  Often the business shuts down without leaving a forwarding address.  They may use more than one location, they may move from one location to another under the same name, or they may change both name and location.  Thus, they are almost impossible to track down when a problem develops.

The U.S. postal inspection service regularly investigates fraudulent work at home schemes, and you risk investigation and possible prosecution by postal or other law enforcement agencies if you become involved in one of these schemes.  You might also want to check out the company with your local consumer protection agency and the state attorney general.

In considering whether to go ahead with it or not, keep these suggestions in mind:

-Consider it a warning if you have to buy something to start the program.
-Beware of “no experience necessary” ads that promise attractive profits and part-time earnings, guaranteed markets and a demand for your handiwork.
-Realize that you may be perpetrating a fraud and risk investigation by postal authorities by selling the same program you bought to others.

Remember if an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

WAHM Job Opportunity: Become a Mystery Shopper

Mystery shopping includes visiting a business site, buying goods or services, and then evaluating the service. Mystery shopping is a one of a kind opportunity for work at home moms.

Mystery shopping involves average customers telling companies how they are doing. The reason companies use mystery shoppers is to determine how well the employees are doing, how good their variety of products is, and what customers think of what they offer and more.

There are companies that hire people for mystery shopping at their stores, but usually mystery shopping is done through secret shopper companies. Mystery shopping involves going to all different types of businesses. You might be asked to drop by a local coffee shop to see what the staff is doing or sent out to a store in the mall to purchase something. The more mystery shopping jobs, the more opportunities you will have including rating restaurants and hotels.

As a secret shopper, you can get an opportunity to avail free goods and services and earn money as well. The payment methods for mystery shopping vary among different companies. Some pay a set amount for a job and some reimburse you for the purchase you make. Flat fee jobs are going to be more profitable but newcomers should take whatever jobs they are offered at first. You may get paid monthly or twice a month but payment requires you to submit all the paperwork and any receipts you are asked to turn in. It is better if you can send this paperwork electronically.

The hard part of mystery shopping may be finding a trustworthy company to work with. Some of them ask you for money upfront, which means they are a scam. Mystery shopping is like all other home based businesses in that you never want to pay to work for any company.

You don't have to worry about the expenses you have when you become a mystery shopper, because eventually your expenses will be reimbursed. In order for you to accurately review a business, you have to make a legitimate purchase from the company.

Mystery shopping is a good way to earn extra money but this job is not very stable. You cannot survive on your income from mystery shopping but you can bring in some extra money to save or spend any way you wish. You also get to try new goods and services while getting paid to do so. For WAHMs, mystery shopping can be a great job.

American Express Survey Reinforces Value of Mystery Shopping

The results of a survey by American Express released on May 3 quantify the business benefits of mystery shopping and reveal the effect of customer service on the bottom line. The study shows that a large majority of Americans are willing to spend appreciably more with companies that provide excellent customer service, a finding that suggests investments in customer service can have significant financial returns. Mystery shopping companies are enthusiastic about the study because it reinforces their assertion that measuring and managing the customer experience through mystery shopping has a positive ROI.

The results of a survey released on May 3 by American Express clearly bode well for companies that conduct mystery shopping programs and act on them. The American Express® Global Customer Service Barometer quantifies the business benefits of good service and the penalties for poor service, providing more evidence in support of the value of implementing mystery shopping programs.
Good service is not just something Americans expect; it is something they are willing to pay for. American Express says seventy percent (70%) indicate they are willing to spend up to 13% more with companies they believe provide excellent customer service, the survey showed.
According to the American Express study, Americans are placing more and more importance on the value of good customer service while, at the same time, they believe the quality of service is slipping. Moreover, says Jim Bush, Executive Vice President of American Express World Service, "Getting service right is more than just a nice to do; it's a must do. American consumers are willing to spend more with companies that provide outstanding service, and they will also tell, on average, twice as many people about bad service than they will about good service. Ultimately, great service can drive sales and customer loyalty."
A key finding from the American Express study reveals that 78% of customers have opted to cancel a transaction or did not complete an intended purchase because of a poor customer experience. Conversely, three in five Americans would try a new brand or company for a better services experience.
Members of the Mystery Shopping Providers Association (MSPA) are enthusiastic about the release of the American Express study because it demonstrates the requirement that businesses pay close attention to the level of service they deliver to their customers if they are to be successful. "We see the study as providing further support for the value of mystery shopping," says MSPA President Lynn Saladini of ath Power Consulting Corporation. "Mystery shopping enables businesses to measure the extent to which they are delivering on their brand promises through the customer experience and to identify and correct deficiencies. Using the statistics from the study, you can calculate that two otherwise identical businesses would have very different revenue pictures if one had excellent customer service and one did not. If the one lacking in excellent service was a $10 million dollar business, its identical competitor could have revenues of $10.93 million. That $930,000 revenue differential is a compelling argument for using mystery shopping to improve customer service."
About Mystery Shopping and the MSPA

Mystery shopping is a process in which pre-recruited and qualified consumers measure the extent to which a customer's interactions with a business mirror the experiences the business intends. The purposes of this customer experience measurement include evaluating customer service and the degree to which a company's brand promises are being executed in the customer environment.
With more than 300 member companies worldwide, the MSPA has a diverse membership, including marketing research and merchandising companies, private investigation firms, training organizations, and other companies that specialize in providing mystery shopping services. Its goals are to establish professional standards and ethics for the industry, educate providers, clients and shoppers to improve quality of service, improve the image of the industry and promote the membership to other industry associations and prospective clients.

Mystery shopping: The key to meaningful customer insight?

In her latest Channel 4 series, retail expert Mary Portas used the mystery shopping technique to highlight the key areas in which leading businesses across a variety of sectors regularly fall down on customer service.

In her latest Channel 4 series, retail expert Mary Portas used the mystery shopping technique to highlight the key areas in which leading businesses across a variety of sectors regularly fall down on customer service. Witnessed by almost three million viewers, the fiery redhead stomped purposefully around fashion outlets, estate agents' showrooms and mobile phone stores, uncovering common flaws in the British high street shopping experience.

Donning a variety of disguises, to avoid being treated like royalty the instant that staff recognise her from previous campaigns, Ms Portas was subject to customer service that varied from mediocre to downright unacceptable. But the 'secret shopper' concept that gave her latest TV outing its name is nothing new. Retail chains have been sending paid 'customers' into their stores for decades. Briefed to make specific demands of staff to examine how well genuine shop visitors are being served,
mystery shoppers have proved a valuable part of many businesses' data collection strategy.

Mystery shoppers: Do companies benefit?

The tough economy means companies are having to take extra steps to make sure their customers are happy, so more are trying out mystery shopping.
Demand has gone up by 40% in the past two years, the Mystery Shopping Providers Association says, and the industry is worth an estimated £70m a year.
Mystery shopping started in the 1940s, and the association says well over a million assessments are carried out every year.
Each one takes up to 20 minutes, and the secret shopper can be paid up to £15 a go.
Undercover experience
We decided to go undercover and try it for ourselves. One mystery shopper, who has been doing it for years as a part-time job, gave us some tips. Unsurprisingly she asked to remain anonymous.
"You're looking out for if the store is clean, the staff are friendly, and if they approach you," she says.
Mystery shopper with Catherine BurnsAn experienced mystery shopper says she reports on whether staff approach her
"If you ask a question, do they take you to the relevant section? Do they ask you open questions, and try to sell you as much as they can?"
With that in mind, we headed to the Llantrisant branch of Leekes, a department store chain based mostly in Wales.
The company knew we were coming, but they had no idea when.
'Unbiased'
It was a mixed experience. We had to search for someone to help us in the homeware section. But once we had found someone they were friendly and approachable.
In other departments, staff were just hanging around, chatting to each other. But once we asked, they did their best to get a sale.
There were some examples of excellent customer service too.
undercovery filming in LeekesLeekes said it uses mystery shoppers to rectify any problems
Some sales assistants did everything they could to answer our questions as helpfully as possible.
But Steve Hurst from the Mystery Shoppers Providers Association says the actual store visit is only part of the job.
"It's just as important what we, and the company itself does with the information. We put it all into a database, and can break it down from the bigger picture across the chain, to each individual store."
Companies pay about £40 each visit, which means nationwide chains can pay hefty bills.
It is difficult to say with any certainty what kind of return businesses get on that investment, Mr Hurst says, but he insists it is a cost-effective and unbiased research tool.
Fake and outdated
Not everyone agrees though. Jeremy Michael is from customer research company SMG, and used to work in mystery shopping. He now thinks it is outdated.
"Years ago, it was the best way to find out what was going on in a store, but now you've got much more modern methods," he says.
"Clients like Superdrug and Pets At Home have moved away from asking fake mystery shoppers, to asking genuine customers what they thought and how they can improve their experience."
But Leekes, who use mystery shoppers, say the feedback helps them.
"There are some positives in the way that staff dealt with you, but some negatives in terms of not being available when you were looking for assistance," says Peter Martin, store operations director at Leekes.
He says that the company will be able to learn from it, and fix any problems.
For them, mystery shopping is not about catching staff doing something wrong, but giving them a chance to show off their skills and training.

Career as a mystery shopper

Businesses are increasingly discovering the importance of customer satisfaction. Faced with countless options, customers expect increasingly high levels of service quality. Further, companies need to know the service standards being followed by employees and whether internal company guidelines are being implemented.

Unravelling the mystery

Mystery shopping can give the organisation a mine of valuable information. Explains Sonul Verdia, General Manager for India, Middle East and Africa, BARE International, a Global Mystery Customer Research company, “Mystery Customer Research is a tool used by market research and mystery customer research companies to measure quality of retail service or gather specific information about products and services. Our role is to provide consistent measurements for our clients to guarantee that they receive data that truly reflects their customers' experiences and satisfaction around the globe.”

Essentially, the ‘mystery shopper’ visits the client location as a regular customer. The shopper must then carry out specific pre-decided tasks—such as asking questions, registering a complaint, noting the sales tactics and timing the service efficiency. The tasks to be performed are determined by the parameters indicated by the client organisation. The mystery shopper fills out a feedback report, detailing their experiences and observations.

“Mystery shopping provides an insight into the world of the customer. The tasks revolve around service scenarios—some very routine, others slightly unusual. For example, I have been asked to go to a bank, express my interest in opening an account and document how the staff takes me through the process,” explains Mumbai-based housewife Sunita Deshpande, who has been on several mystery shopping assignments. Businesses then use this information to improve their service standards. Employee bonuses may also be determined by the rating given to them by mystery shoppers.

It is a common misconception that customer research equals market research. Explains Verdia, “The biggest differentiator is that customer research is more objective based and deep dives into why customer feel and react in a certain way rather than a market research study, which would be more subjective, perception driven, focusing on how customers behave.”

Being a mystery shopper

The beauty of mystery shopping is that is requires you to be yourself, going about your regular shopping experience, while paying attention to certain predefined criteria. “Shoppers must usually be above 18 years old, must adhere to instructions, while being objective and thorough in their evaluations. They must be observant, honest and strictly meet all deadlines. Finally, they should never give away their true identities and create the required scenarios. Hence, they need to be good role players,” says career counsellor Rupa Keswani.

“Most people can be mystery shoppers, depending on the client need. One just needs to pay attention to details and be able to follow a defined scenario. Some mystery shopping projects require our evaluators to have a specific industry qualification to look more credible or to validate their knowledge and not alert the staff when conducting their evaluation,” backs Verdia.

Practical pointers

Mystery shoppers are usually paid on an assignment basis, depending on their experience, skills and the complexity of the task. Payment could also be in non-cash modes, such as vouchers, depending on the company you are dealing with. Most shoppers use mystery shopping as a supplementary stream of income, since it allows relatively flexible work schedules. It is also ideal for those who want part-time work schedules.

Prospective mystery shoppers should keep in mind that there are countless scams associated with this field, usually financial in nature. To avoid being duped, it is advisable to join the field through a reputed intermediary, a company that conducts mystery customer research. Applications can be made online and jobs are routed through a centralised system. The remuneration one earns usually depends on the job profile assigned. “I am able to scan jobs online, read the description of the tasks required and select ones which are located close-by. Job descriptions aren’t merely about walking into a shop and buying a product. The diversity is exciting and challenging,” says Delhi-based college student and mystery shopper Komal Gupta.

Career Prospects

“The industry has grown along with the Indian economy. As an example, the more retail stores, the bigger the need for mystery shopping. We are also seeing more competition than ever before, which validates that India companies have a bigger budget for mystery shopping projects. With today’s social media technologies, companies cannot afford to have a poor customer service as it will spread like wildfire online,” ends Verdia.

Mystery Shopping: What To Do On A Mystery Shop Assignment

Most mystery shops need you to make plenty of observations & keep in mind or record several pieces of information. &, you need to do this without making it obvious that you are doing a mystery shop. (That is the 'mystery' part!) Mystery shopping gets simpler with practice. Here are some tips to help you do a great job on your next shop, even if it is your first.

Make definite you are thoroughly prepared before going to the location. Be definite to do the shop in the coursework of the timeframe necessary. If the shop is to be completed between the 1st & the 10th of the month, do it then. If it is meant to be completed in the coursework of definite hours of the day (e.g., dinner, between four:30 & 7:30 p.m.) be definite to go at that time. & make definite you go to the right location. Double check the business name & the address.

Each of the questions on the document form is there because the client needs to know about that aspect of his business. Make definite you get the information to answer each query exactly & . But don't cease there. In case you notice something that is not asked about on the form, whether it is lovely or bad, make a note of it. Keep in mind to keep all comments aim. This is not about your personal taste & opinions.

of the myths about mystery shopping is that the shopper is looking for what is wrong. Some think that in the event that they haven't found plenty of âbad stuffâ they haven't completed their jobs as mystery shoppers. In fact, your job is to give an aim picture of your experience at the business.

The document form & directions tell you what to look for when doing the shop. You may be told to go to a definite department & ask questions about the merchandise, or check items to see in the event that they are in stock.

If the experience was great, that is excellent news. Most of the questions you are asked in your document demand aim answers. You are not writing a review, you are describing what happenedso tell it like it is, with the lovely, the bad, & the ugly!

When You Arrive
The shop begins before you have gotten out of your automobile. The document may include questions about the condition of the parking zone & building exterior, for example. In case you cannot be observed by employees, you may note the answers on your form before you get out of the automobile.

It is & a lovely suggestion to make a fast review of the form before you go in. Read the items you highlighted to remind yourself what information you need to get. Check to see that you have your tip sheet tucked away in your pocket or purse. Make definite your watch is prepared to time anything you need to time, & make a note of what time you are entering the business.

Getting Names
Most shops need that you get the names of the workers you observed. That can be simple in the event that they are wearing name tags. Of coursework, you ought to be subtle about reading name tags. Don't stare or make a massive deal about it.

Taking Notes or Using a Recorder
As you can tell, there is a lot to include in your reports. You  certainly won't be able to recall it all without making some notes as you do the shop ( when you are new at this). Be discreet about making notes. Employees know that mystery shoppers are used, & in the event that they know they are being shopped you won't get an correct picture.

When you cannot get a name, be definite to get a lovely description. Some reports will ask for description even in case you have the name. Gender, race, height, weight, hair color & style, & characteristics such as glasses or a beard can all be used to identify somebody. Don't report them using unflattering or insensitive descriptions, such as overweight, foreign, etc.

You will  always must check the rest room. That is a lovely place to make notes about what you have observed to that point, & review your tip sheet to remind yourself what else you need to do. When doing a retail shop, you may be able to over a shopping list & make notes there.

Sometimes you will be asked to record the shop. This is true when you are having a long conversation with an worker (e.g., an apartment rental agent, banker, etc.). You may also select to discreetly use a recorder in the coursework of other shops.

Keep in mind That You Are a 'Mystery' Shopper

When you are doing a shop, you must not let somebody know that you are a mystery shopper. The whole idea is that you need to see how the typical customer is treated. In the event that they know you are a mystery shopper, you won't have a typical experience.

In the coursework of a shop, you might be able to make use of the pay phone or your mobile phone to call your home answering machine & leave a message with names or other observations you need to have for your document. Of coursework, you ought to only do this in case you are definite you won't be overheard by employees.

Don't over your document form with you. Some companies will provide a tip sheet which you can fold up & over to remind you of what you need to do on the shop. Be discreet when you take any notes. Plenty of times, you can over a shopping list & make your notes there.

Don't tell somebody who works for the store that you are mystery shopping, & don't discuss mystery shopping with any companions you have. In case you have children with you, don't tell them you are doing a mystery shop in the event that they are likely to share this information with somebody who happens to be around.

You may feel conspicuous, the first few times you go mystery shopping. It may appear to you that you have a massive neon sign on your brow, flashing MYSTERY SHOPPER. In fact, as long as you are discreet & professional, no will know that you are a mystery shopper.

An Introduction to Mystery Shopping and Secret Shopping

The use of a mystery shopper first occurred in the 1940s. Banks sent in a secret shopper to help prevent worker thief by observing their honesty and the way they treated account holders. Secret shopping soon appeared in the retail section.

Mystery Shopping is a program that allows companies to learn about their business from the customers point of view. Both negative and positive aspects are pointed out. They may find that their end-caps do not attract sales or that selves are high for most customers. Perhaps the number of check-out stations does not match the week-end demand or employees may be rude.

Companies can learn what improvements are needed to improve customers satisfaction. Customer satisfaction means repeat customers and repeat customers improve the bottom line.

Mystery Shopping can go as deep as analysing product arrangements on a shelf, to see what promotions are jogging in store in what location and how they are perceived by store visitors up to the dress code and politeness of the staff.
Mystery Shopping is applicable to all types of business. Every business has customers and every businesses customers service can be measured using secret shopping techniques.

Businesses of all sizes and serving all markets have had tremendous success and gained valuable insights in to customer perception from well-structured secret shopping campaigns.

Regular mystery shopping visits are a must. A business must build up a history of feedback on their customer support offering, take on board the feedback and act on it and then continue to measure on an ongoing basis.
Continuous but small improvements are what work best.

Plenty of mystery shopping or secret shopping companies provide trials of their services. They recommend you take a trial with a reputable provider and see the kind of rich information they can provide on your organisation.

Things you wouldn't or couldn't afford any other way. So with that said, here,s what you'll need to know to become a mystery shopper.

First off, the lovely news is you won't must have a professional degree. anyone can do it. You may be paid to shop at some of the finest stores, visit conventions, events & casino's & possibly take journeys. You ought to seldom must pay to become a Mystery Shopper. Having said that, there's companies out there that act like middle men, who can hook you up with experienced shoppers & other companies. Some of these companies may need a membership fee to be paid in order to join a member area, but being part of the company is free.

Mystery shopping isn't of those things that will be simple. I do know it sounds like it could be simple, but it's not. In case you finish up getting free merchandise, consumer products and/or services, it will be because you worked for them. Companies don't mind giving free samples out to the individuals who help them out, but they're not about to give away free stuff for the sake of it!

Who Makes The Best Mystery Shoppers

If you're the type of that has trouble telling people what you think, then this gig isn't for you. In case you can't tell a person or write a document stating that the Waiter at your favourite restaurant smelled of B.O., or provided you sloppy service, don't bother. This is the kind of stuff that companies need to know. You may have made a connection with the Waitresses down at the Coffee shop, but your document needs to detail important stuff like whether or not they followed definite guidelines & procedures.

In short, only brutally honest people make the best Mystery Shoppers. In case you can't do that, find something else to do in your spare time.

In case you put that he was unfriendly, that isn't going to cut it. They'll need to know details of how he was unfriendly. Was he short with you? Did he go out of her way to see that you were satisfied? In what ways were you not satisfied? These are some of the things the company will need to know.

Speaking of being reimbursed, over likely you'll must put your own funds up front. Later, you'll turn in receipts & other documentation so they company can pay you. It may not always be with funds, as lots of mystery shoppers do it for the products they get.
